THE SUMMER GARDEN
THE SUMMER GARDEN is the oldest park in St. Petersburg. The jewel of St. Petersburg's parks, this garden dates back to 1704, just after the founding of the city. The river bank along the garden was a site of early experiments in containing the river's flow and for building embankments.
Peter the Great and his contemporaries understood the importance of trees and green space in a city, and the Summer Garden has always played a central role in greening the city. It also is a magnet for artists and poets. Thus the Summer Garden epitomizes the intersection of ecological and aesthetic interests, both of which are under threat today.
