CAMPUSES TAKING THE LEAD
All over the U.S., students are leading the way toward smarter, wiser energy use and revolutionizing the way their colleges do business along the way.

CAMPUS ENERGY USE

DO IT IN THE DARK

Williams College students "Do it in the Dark" -- dorms compete to see which can reduce electricity use the most.

GREEN POWER

At Western Washington University, students voted overwhelmingly to increase their student fee to pay for 100% renewable sources of electricity

FOOD AND ENERGY

YALE SUSTAINABLE FOOD PROJECT

Our food choices have a huge impact on energy use. In addition to the environmental and energy costs of conventional food production in the US, most of our food travels thousands of miles before it reaches our tables. BY buying LOCAL and ORGANICALLY GROWN FOODS, composting, and growing their own food on the new Yale farm, the Yale Sustainable Food project makes a big impact on the university's contribution to climate change, while giving students great, healthy food!

TRANSPORTATION

@ Duke

Duke University is reducing the energy used to transport people to and from campus with a coordinated system of carpools, vanpools, buses, bicycle commuting amenities and emergency ride services.

Bicycle Plan

The University of Oregon offers covered bike parking, well-lighted bike racks, and classes in bike repair as part of a coordinated plan to promote biking to campus.

OTHER INITIATIVES

POLITICAL ACTION: Make all candidates take a stand on global warming. Student activists in New Hampshire helped convert presidential candidate John McCain to the cause. Marchers in Vermont have drawn attention to the politics of global warming.

TRASH REDUCTION:
Dump & Run is a project to re-sell items students discard at the end of the school year. Freecycle offers another model for keeping stuff out of landfills.

EMORY R E C Y C L E S

Trash Fashion and recycled art shows are fun ways to re-think the idea of "waste."

TREE PLANTING:
Campus greening projects can make a difference.

There are several incentives being offered for campus environmental initiatives -- go green AND win a prize, too!
Campus Climate Challenge is coordinating clean energy campaigns around the country

Cool rewards for innovative and ambitious teams of students.

mtvU and G.M. are offering $25,000 to the team of students with the best ideas for making their school greener -- plus an mtvU concert!
