CAMPUS ENERGY USE
Williams College students "Do it in the Dark" -- dorms compete to see which can reduce electricity use the most.
At Western Washington University, students voted overwhelmingly to increase their student fee to pay for 100% renewable sources of electricity |
FOOD AND ENERGY
Our food choices have a huge impact on energy use. In addition to the environmental and energy costs of conventional food production in the US, most of our food travels thousands of miles before it reaches our tables. BY buying LOCAL and ORGANICALLY GROWN FOODS, composting, and growing their own food on the new Yale farm, the Yale Sustainable Food project makes a big impact on the university's contribution to climate change, while giving students great, healthy food! |
TRANSPORTATION
Duke University is reducing the energy used to transport people to and from campus with a coordinated system of carpools, vanpools, buses, bicycle commuting amenities and emergency ride services.
The University of Oregon offers covered bike parking, well-lighted bike racks, and classes in bike repair as part of a coordinated plan to promote biking to campus. |
OTHER INITIATIVES POLITICAL ACTION: Make all candidates take a stand on global warming. Student activists in New Hampshire helped convert presidential candidate John McCain to the cause. Marchers in Vermont have drawn attention to the politics of global warming. TRASH REDUCTION:
Trash Fashion and recycled art shows are fun ways to re-think the idea of "waste." TREE PLANTING: |
