Reducing the environmental impact of commuting to work on University Hill.

What is the Campus Commuter Challenge?

The CCC aims to encourage SU and ESF employees and off-campus students to leave their cars at home and find other ways to commute to campus.

Why take the Challenge?

It's not just about winning prizes! By driving less, we can all save money on gas, reduce the vehicle emissions that cause air pollution and global warming, and reduce the parking crunch on campus. Walking and biking also are good exercise, and carpooling and riding the bus are ways to build community.

How do I take the Challenge?

Every work day in October that you use an alternative method of commuting (walking, biking, riding the bus, carpooling), you can record your participation using our online tool. The FIRST time you participate, you will create at user name and answer a few simple questions about your normal commute (how far away you live, how you normally commute, etc.). After that, you just record your participation each successive day.

How can I win prizes?

Each week, we will be drawing the names of: one person who walked, one who biked, one who rode the bus, and one who carpooled. Prizes will include gift certificates and goods and services donated by local businesses and our sponsors.

At the end of October, we will award GRAND PRIZES to a student and an employee who participated the most times during the month. (In the event of a tie, there will be a drawing for this prize and some smaller runner-up prizes.)

2007 Results
Overall results
And the winners are:
630 people took the survey
576 people took the Challenge and left their cars at home for at least one day during the month
An estimated 4-5 tons of CO2 was saved by those 576 people leaving the car home for one day. If they did it for a whole month, that would be nearly 100 tons of CO2 saved!
83 people left their cars home for the first time ever -- and nearly all said they would try it again
We collected many good suggestions for improving transportation options on University Hill.
